Names for places in the community must meet NSW Geographical Names Board guidelines. Council pre-screens a shortlist that meets the standards before inviting the community to vote. This reduces the risk a name will be rejected by the Board when Council submits the community's preference.
The results of this community consultation will be presented back to Council for consideration. Council makes a determination and submits the proposed name to the NSW Geographic Names Board (GNB) who is responsible for endorsement and referral to the GNB for approval under the Geographical Names Act 1966.
This Act requires the GNB Secretariat to review Council's submission against relevant policies and principles. If supported, the GNB Secretariat opens the proposal to members of the public for comment with an advertising period of one month.
The Foreshore Park is a proposed 2-hectare park located at Wentworth Point, wrapping around the foreshore of the Parramatta River and adjacent to the Newington Nature Reserve Mangroves.
Not yet built, the foreshore park is to be delivered by the developer through an agreed Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) with Council.
Sekisui House (the developer) is currently in the process of implementing the foreshore park including remediating the site of contaminants and upgrading the existing sea wall between Hill Road and Louise Sauvage Pathway.
Concept plans published by the developer include a pathway along the river’s edge, central lawn area, and playground.
The park is part of a Voluntary Planning Agreement between Sekisui House (the developer) and City of Parramatta Council. The developer is responsible for remediating the site and delivering a public park under the agreement.
The name options come from two sources: one (Sanctuary Park) has been proposed by the developer and the other (Bula badhu Park) was researched and developed through a process of consultation with Traditional Owners the Baramadagal people including Baramadagal Elders, as well as the broader Dharug community.
