Project Update - May 2025

Delivery of the Shannons Paddock District Playground has commenced!

Construction of the new Shannons Paddock District Playground commenced on Monday 12 May 2025 and is expected to take approximately 14 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Background

At the Council Meeting held on Monday 11 December 2023, the City of Parramatta adopted the Shannons Paddock Masterplan. The Masterplan was informed following three rounds of community consultation, and Council thanks all those involved in the planning for this important open space.

Funding has been allocated to deliver Stage 1 of the Adopted Masterplan, which includes the upgrade of the existing playground to a new "district-sized" facility suitable for a growing community living in medium to high-density accommodation.

The playground has been designed to reference the Shannon’s Brick, Tile and Pottery Factory which operated near the site from 1912-1982. It will include a challenging high ropes course amongst the frames of a replica factory, with slides, swings and a climbing wall incorporated into its design.

Concept plan and community consultation

In October 2024 Council undertook a period of community consultation on a Draft Playground Upgrade Concept Plan. Thank you to everyone who participated. The Draft Playground Concept Plan can be found here.

Overall, community support for the draft concept was positive. When asked “Do you support the proposed playground design?”, 88% of participants provided a positive response (46% responded “yes”, and 42% responded “yes to an extent”).

As a result of community consultation and further design development, Council has made minor amendments to the concept plan including:

  • Play equipment relocated further from base of existing trees to be retained (refer to 9 and 10 of the final concept plan),
  • Areas of softfall rubber have been reduced, however are still located within high wear areas to allow access to various play elements,
  • Due to budget restraints, the electric BBQ may not be installed at this time, however would be a priority for Council to install as part of future works. An additional picnic setting would be installed in the location of the BBQ as an interim measure.

The final concept plan includes:

  • A “Brick and Tile Factory” play structure designed to reference the Shannon’s Brick, Tile and Pottery Factory which operated near the site from 1912-1982.
  • A challenging ropes course amongst the frames of a replica factory.
  • Small and large slides.
  • Climbing wall on the façade of the replica factory.
  • Under croft cubby house integrated into the replica factory.
  • Two swing sets including basket swing.
  • “Brick and Tile Factory Storage Yard” including large concrete factory blocks for climbing net hammocks and low climbing nets.
  • In-ground trampoline.
  • Bench seating.
  • New picnic facilities including shelters, picnic tables and bin.
  • New drinking fountain (bubbler).
  • New concrete footpaths.
