Due to funding restrictions, the playground is being delivered in stages. Everything you see in this Stage 1 design will be constructed in 2025. However, it is proposed the playground will be expanded over time (including the toilet facility) as additional funding becomes available.
The playground is currently fenced along the Darcy Road frontage and adjacent to the stormwater canal. The existing fencing will be retained as part of the upgrade works.
In 2022 and 2023, Council consulted with the local community to develop a masterplan for Shannons Paddock to guide improvements to the park over the next decade. The community provided ideas and feedback on the overall direction for Shannons Paddock, including the playground. Council resolved to upgrade the playground to a "district-sized" facility suitable for a growing community living in medium to high-density accommodation.
The design principles identified by the community were:
- A fun place with lots of different activities and play equipment
- A place for adventure and discovery through the natural landscapes
- A community gathering place for picnics and events
The draft concept plan seeks to incorporate these principles.

Council will consider the community's feedback, then seek tenders with construction anticipated in 2025.
Made of engineered, reinforced concrete, these slides have greater thermal stability than plastic or stainless steel, and are comfortable for children and carers.
They are polished to achieve optimal slipperiness!
To see one of these new slides installed, visit the playground at Arthur Phillip Park on Redbank Road, Northmead.
Council anticipates the bridge over the canal and pedestrian and cyclist pathways will be delivered in early 2026. More information about these aspects of the masterplan can be found here.
