The aim is to boost business and highlight Harris Park as a destination by celebrating the connection to South Asia and introducing decorative elements such as a gate or gateway, murals, additional catenary lighting and more shade.
In February 2023, Council received an invitation from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts to apply for $3.5 million in funding under the ‘Investing in Our Communities’ Program. The purpose of the funding is to:
- enhance community infrastructure
- encourage community cohesion, and
- have a positive impact on economic activity within communities.
Yes, Council is inviting feedback on the option for a gate or gateway from the community. This will help Council:
- understand the community's vision for a gate
- inform the design process
- allocate funding if Council is successul in its application
The survey presents three styles (see below) and asks for your response. The images are examples only to indicate what might be possible.
In this draft concept plan, the gate or gateway is located at the intersection of Marion Street and Station Street East.
The draft plan provides options for including street art, street trees, catenary lighting (criss crossing Marion Street), decorations on existing lightpoles, and additional ideas for South Asian decorations in Wigram Street (see examples from Leicester and Sydney below). Complete the survey to share your response.
The investment seeks to boost business and position Harris Park as a destination of choice with a unique food and cultural offering by creating welcoming entrances, updating the streetscape and increasing the tree canopy.
Other benefits include:
- co-investment grants for businesses in the area to improve their signage and shopfront
- funding towards improving security lighting and cameras.
Feedback will be used to further Council’s application for the $3.5 million ‘Investing in Our Communities’ grant to support the streetscape improvements and grants for business to improve their street presence.
