Next Steps
Community feedback has been considered along with feedback from other stakeholders to determine which proposed names for the three streets and park in the northernmost part of the Carter Street Precinct were recommended to Council for endorsement.
The following names were endorsed by Council on Monday 10 August 2020:
- Kingfisher Street
- Honeyeater Street
- Fantail Street
- Kestrel Park
Upon Council endorsement, the street names were then sent to the NSW Geographical Names Board (GNB) for final approval and gazettal. The proposed street names were approved by the GNB and gazetted on Tuesday 8 September 2020. Kestrel Park was officially gazetted on 29 January 2021.
Further naming proposals will also be prepared for the remaining areas of the Carter Street Precinct. You will be provided with another opportunity to have your say when consultation on naming for these areas takes place.
Background
In September 2019, we invited the community to provide feedback on 15 proposed names (and some alternative options) for a number of roads, streets, lanes and open spaces in the new Carter Street Precinct. In June 2020, we then asked the community to provide feedback on proposed names for three streets and a park in the northern most part of the precinct.
The Carter Street Precinct is a 52-hectare site located south-west of Sydney Olympic Park and north of the M4 Motorway, in Lidcombe. Over the next 20 years, the precinct and adjoining areas will be transformed into a vibrant new community including 5,500 new homes, retail and business facilities, a new primary school and new links to Sydney Olympic Park.
The feedback that you provided for the first round of name proposals in September 2019 helped Council to prepare final names for several streets and parks in the Carter Street Precinct. In late May 2020, all of the endorsed street, road and lane names were officially gazetted by the NSW Geographical Names Board (GNB).
Signs will begin to appear in the Carter Street Precinct and on maps shortly. To find out which names have now been gazetted, please see the Carter Street Precinct Map in the 'Current Resources' section.
June 2020 community engagement
From Wednesday 3 to Wednesday 24 June 2020, Council invited the community to provide feedback on proposed names for three streets and a park in the northern most part of the Carter Street Precinct. The location of these proposed streets and park can be found on the Carter Street Precinct Map in the 'Current Resources' section.
All proposed names came from birdlife seen in and around the Carter Street Precinct and were chosen in line with the NSW Geographical Names Board criteria to reflect the heritage values of the area. Descriptions and images of the birds can be found in the 'Naming streets and a park in the northern part of the precinct (June 2020)' brochure in the 'June 2020 Resources' section.
During the consultation period, sixty-seven people responded to the online survey, while four submissions were received via email. Kingfisher Street was the most popular street name chosen via the survey, with 59% of respondents selecting this option, while the most popular park name chosen was Kestrel Park, selected by 50% of respondents.
