Unnamed laneway in Granville

Council invited community feedback on a proposal to name an unnamed laneway in Granville.

This consultation concluded at 5pm on Tuesday 26 April, 2022.

On Tuesday 14 June 2022, Council endorsed the most popular choice, Harmon Lane, for the unnamed laneway that runs from A'Beckett Street to Alfred Street.

Council also resolved to name two additional lanes which are nearby and were identified by local residents during the consultation period. The first runs adjacent to laneway one and intersects with Kemp Street - endorsed as Carlotta Lane. The second runs off Quince Lane and meets with Good Street to the west and has been endorsed as McGill Lane.

Naming laneways is essential for residents who have frontages and/or rear access, as well as for businesses and deliveries servicing the local area.

How have the proposed names been chosen?

The NSW Geographical Names Board encourages place names that reflect the heritage, culture and identity of a site, and make it distinctive and memorable for residents and the wider community.

Council undertakes research to identify significant stories and histories to propose names that meet this and other important criteria. For example, the name must not be repeated within a 10 kilometre radius.

With preliminary approval from the NSW Geographical Names Board, Council then presents the options to the wider community.

Pre-approved names

The proposed names acknowledged families with a historical connection to premises adjacent to the laneway.
