Project Update - May 2025

City of Parramatta publicly exhibited an updated Somerville Park Draft Concept Plan from Monday 22 July 2024 until Monday 19 August 2024.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback! The project page was viewed over 3,500 times and Council received over 50 submissions via survey and email.

To address feedback from the community, the revised concept plan included revisiting the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) to assess the proposed upgrades’ environmental impacts to local fauna and amending the light pole locations to improve safety. Council received several suggestions to extend the operating hours of the existing toilet and to improve safety measures for crossing Blaxland Road. Although these concerns are beyond the current project's scope, our officers are actively seeking solutions.

Construction commenced mid-2025 and anticipated to finish in late-2025.

The proposed improvements at Somerville Park, Eastwood aim to support a growing community by aligning with the notion of a 'shared backyard'. The proposed upgrades will deliver environmental, recreational and community benefits.

Council used feedback from the initial ‘Play your way' consultation undertaken in November 2022 to design an updated Draft Concept Plan. The proposed improvements include:

  • New multipurpose court for ball sports and table tennis
  • New playground for all ages, including a new nature play area
  • Re-lined car park area. The existing disabled car parking spaces will be brought up to current compliant standards
  • Concrete path connection to Pearl Avenue to improve connectivity and encourage walking
  • Concrete circuit path around the oval to promote an active lifestyle
  • Two new outdoor fitness stations
  • Improved the existing riparian area
  • Upgraded maintenance vehicle gate
  • Upgraded sportsfield lighting to improve lighting levels
  • Re-lined rugby field and training field

This $4.3m project is proudly funded by the NSW Government's Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program in association with City of Parramatta Council.
