Consultation has concluded. Thank you for having your say and helping us name the three bushland reserves!
Three bushland reserves along Plympton Road in Carlingford and Beecroft are home to critically endangered ecological communities including Blue Gum High Forest and Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest.
Council sought community feedback from Tuesday 14 June 2022 to Friday 8 July 2022 to help name the three bushland reserves. Our role is to seek pre-approval from the NSW Geographical Names Board (GNB) and gather public feedback prior to the GNB running a public consultation process. Please read through the Naming a Place Guide prepared by the GNB for an understanding of the process that will be followed.

Public exhibition closed at 5pm on Friday 8 July 2022. We are now reviewing your feedback and will be in touch in the coming months. To stay updated on this project, click the follow button on the top right-hand side of the page.
The proposed names acknowledge and celebrate the continued Dharug culture of the local area. The names have been inspired by the concept of a 'Teaching Place' and have been developed in consultation with the Darug Custodian Aboriginal Corporation.
The proposed names reflect First Nations culture, and the continued connection to country, places, and people. Your top three choices will be used to name the three reserves.
At its meeting of 22 August 2022, Council considered Item 13.7 ‘Naming Proposal for Three Unnamed Bushland Reserves along Plympton Road in Carlingford and Beecroft’.
Council endorsed Dharug names for the East and Central Parcels of Bushland Reserve but noted that there was no clear community preference for the naming of the West parcel of Bushland Reserve. Council resolved that further research be undertaken regarding the Finch Family and their contribution to the Carlingford and Beecroft area.
The suggestions reference the pioneering history of the area. Both road and park names in this area carry the names of other early pioneers. The Finch family were pioneers in the area and worked to produce crops for the Sydney market in the early 1920’s and have lived in Carlingford since that time.
For further information on Plympton Central and East, see the FAQs section.
The proposed names acknowledge and celebrate local pioneering history in the area.
Our role is to seek approval from the NSW Geographical Names Board (GNB) and gather public feedback prior to the GNB running a public consultation process. Please read through the Naming a Place Guide prepared by the GNB for an understanding of the process that will be followed.
The results of the community consultation will be presented back to Council and inform their determination for formal referral of the naming of the West Reserve.
Council would then submit this request to the NSW Geographic Names Board (GNB) who is responsible for endorsement and referral to the GNB for approval under the Geographical Names Act 1966. This Act requires the GNB Secretariat to review against relevant policies and principles and prepare a report for consideration at the next GNB Board meeting.
If supported, GNB Secretariat opens the proposal to the members of the public for comment with an advertising period of one month.
Council invited submissions on the naming of Plympton Road Bushland Reserve West in the following ways:
- Completing the online submission form
- Via email, post or verbally
The public exhibition period closed at 5pm on Monday 28 November 2022.
