STAGE TWO CONSULTATION
Thank you to everyone that provided feedback during stage one and two consultation.
During stage one, in February to March 2022, we asked you we asked you what play equipment you wanted to see and how we could improve your experience at the park. Council reviewed this feedback and invited tenders from play equipment companies. To learn more about what we heard during stage one, click on the 'Stage One' tab above.
During stage two, in April 2022, we asked you to nominate your favourite play equipment out of the four options provided! There were four options to choose from, each with different themes and equipment. You can view the layouts below and refer to the documents in resources for further images of the play equipment.
STAGE ONE CONSULTATION
Ken Newman Park is located on Heysen Avenue, Ermington. The much-loved local playground here is now ready for an upgrade and is being replaced under the City of Parramatta Playground Replacement Program.
Currently, the playground has ‘skill based’ play type elements that cater mostly to juniors (6-12 years). In line with the City of Parramatta Community Infrastructure Strategy, the upgrade will provide an increase in the ‘natural’, ‘sensory’ and ‘imaginative’ play type elements included, and ensure that the playground is suitable to both pre-schoolers (aged 0-5) and juniors (aged 6-12).
As this is a local playground upgrade, the scope of possible inclusions are limited by the available budget. Check out what is in-scope and out-of-scope below.
- New play equipment
- Playground surface upgrade
- New seating
- New shade tree planting
- New fencing and toilets
- Shade sails
- Exercise equipment
- Flying foxes or trampolines
- Water playground or splash pad
- New location within reserve
- New bubbler
Community engagement
Thank you to everyone that participated in stage one community engagement for the upgrade of the playground at Ken Newman Park!
Forty people filled in the online survey, 72.5% of whom identified as parents/carers of young children and 72.5% who live nearby - over 50% use the park daily or weekly!
We asked what were the aspects of a playground most important and you said play equipment, shade structures and amenities such as bubblers. In terms of play equipment, the three most popular pieces of equipment were climbing equipment, slides and swings.
Frequently asked questions
The playground is being replaced under the City of Parramatta Playground Replacement Program as it has reached the end of its functional life and must be upgraded to meet Australian standards for playground safety.
At this stage, the available budget is not large enough to allow for the installation of shade sails. However, in response to the Community Infrastructure Strategy recommendation that shade be considered as part of local playground upgrades, additional shade trees will be planted around and within the playground footprint to take advantage of extensive existing garden beds.
This playground does not require fencing due to its safe location away from roads or traffic.
At this stage, the playground upgrade should not require the removal of any trees.
No water play is planned for this playground as it is only to be installed in specially considered locations and is too expensive to install and maintain under a local playground budget.
No trampolines or flying foxes are planned for this playground as these items are too expensive to be funded under a local playground budget.
Outdoor exercise equipment is not designed for children and cannot be included in playgrounds. The budget has been specifically allocated to upgrade the playground and does not allow for additional items in the park.
Yes, the playground will include a minimum of two new seats with backrests.
No. A new bin and bubbler were considered but will not be included in this update.
The play surface around the play equipment will be made from a coloured porous rubber.
