Public domain upgrades to improve the greenery, accessibility and vibrancy of Iron Street Shops and improve its connectivity to local points of interest (e.g Belmore Park, Lake Parramatta, Parramatta Light Rail).
These could include but are not limited to:
• Planting more trees and shrubs to improve the shade and local micro-climate
• Installing additional seating and/or spaces for outdoor dining
• Making the centre more pet friendly by installing pet drinking fountains
• Installing additional lighting, making the centre safer to traverse at night
• Improve the amenity by making the centre more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists
Upgrades that are out of scope within this project include any major underground or overhead works (e.g moving the overhead wiring or disturbing/moving any underground utilities) as well as any works to the privately owned shop fronts and second story apartments.
Council has allocated $650,000 under the Better Neighbourhood Program.
The Better Neighbourhood Program (BNP) enhances local centres outside Parramatta CBD by upgrading streetscapes, improving access, and creating safer, more vibrant spaces. Since 1999, the program has revitalised key areas based on community feedback and centre conditions.
For 2024–26, Council has allocated $3.2 million to upgrade multiple locations, including Iron Street Shops. These improvements aim to boost safety, accessibility, and economic activity, ensuring thriving local precincts. Community input is crucial in shaping these upgrades.
More information about the BNP can be found here.
While every attempt will be made to limit any impact on the accessibility into and within the centre during construction, some access may be impacted or limited. Further information will be communicated to the local community and businesses closer to the construction date.
