The Granville HPAA project is an initiative aimed at improving pedestrian safety and traffic flow in Granville by reducing speed limits to 40 km/h and implementing various traffic calming measures.
Research has shown that a pedestrian hit by a vehicle traveling at 40 km/h has a significantly higher chance of survival compared to higher speeds. The 40 km/h speed limit is intended to reduce accidents and improve safety for pedestrians.
Residents can expect the installation of raised pedestrian crossings, new signage, pavement markings, and kerb extensions to encourage slower driving speeds and provide safer pedestrian crossings.
The project aims to enhance pedestrian safety without causing significant disruption to traffic flow. However, some adjustments in commute times may occur during the implementation phase.
There will be a loss of around 20 on street car parking spaces to construct four raised pedestrian crossings and a pedestrian refuge island in Bridge Street, Cowper Street, East Street and Rowell Street, Granvile. The affected two accessible car parking spaces in Rowell Street will be relocated to the immediate vicinity so that there is no reduction of disabled car parking spaces from this area.
Community members can share their thoughts and suggestions by completing the online submission form on this website or contacting the project team directly via email or phone.
We are committed to working closely with local businesses to minimise disruptions and enhance access. The project team will ensure that changes benefit both pedestrians and businesses by maintaining accessibility and encouraging foot traffic.
The success of the project will be evaluated through ongoing monitoring of traffic speeds, accident rates, and community feedback to ensure that the objectives of improving safety and accessibility are met.
The detailed design and approvals are expected to be completed by December 2024. Construction is scheduled to commence in early 2025, with completion anticipated by June 2025. We will keep the community updated on progress and timelines through this website and other communication channels.
