Active Youth are Healthy Youth

Phase one community engagement (now closed)

Council wants to create spaces where young people feel welcome and safe!

In early-mid 2025, Council sought community feedback to help develop a Design Brief and Youth Infrastructure Plan! We wanted to hear your thoughts on the areas that young people gather, socialise, study, read and play. We also asked about how you use public space and what sort of spaces you would like Council to provide to make the City of Parramatta a better place to relax and play.

City of Parramatta is a fast growing and diverse city, with increasing numbers of people from culturally diverse backgrounds, living in high density, and spanning different age profiles.

Young people need safe, welcoming and enjoyable places. However, Council’s current play space network has few dedicated spaces for those in the 12-24 age group. It is not uncommon for youth focused recreational infrastructure to be overlooked by the planning process, so Council invited you to share your thoughts and ideas, to help develop a plan that responds to our community.

This project is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with the City of Parramatta Council.

Phase one community engagement (now closed) - Developing a Design Brief and Youth Infrastructure Plan!

Thank you to all the young people that contributed ideas and suggestions.Feedback for phase one was welcome until 5pm on Tuesday 15 April 2025.

Council is now reviewing everything that we have heard and is in the process of working on a Draft Youth Infrastructure Plan. Once prepared, Council will undertake a second round of consultation in late-2025.

In 2022, Council applied for funding under the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program (formerly Westlnvest), in the category of Community Infrastructure - projects that improve access to quality sport, recreation and other community facilities that unite people and enable a diverse range of activities. The Project was identified by Council as being a priority for application and was ultimately successful in securing $1.5m of funding from the NSW Government under the program.

City of Parramatta's Community Infrastructure Strategy identifies a shortage of youth-focused play infrastructure across the LGA. Many parks and play spaces in Parramatta LGA lack a variety of facilities to meet the broader needs of diverse user groups - most play spaces within City of Parramatta are targeted at children 0-5 years of age (96%) or young people between the ages of 6-12 (66%). However, only 2% of the current play space network caters for young people aged 13+.

Council aims to support young people in the crucial development stage of self-identity, peer relationships, networks and value systems by providing accessible and attractive spaces to explore, socialise and relax. To achieve this, the Active Youth Are Healthy Youth project seeks to deliver a Design Brief for additional youth play facilities in the Dundas Ward (Dundas, Dundas Valley, Ermington, North Parramatta, Oatlands, Parramatta, Rydalmere and Telopea), which will be informed by a research based, strategic Youth Infrastructure Plan. The results of this project will help us figure out where and what type of youth facilities we will need in the future.
