Every year on the 28th of January, Global Community Engagement Day seeks to encourage organisations, individuals, and businesses to better engage with their community.

Community engagement, also known as ‘public participation’, is about involving people in decision making and it is at the very core of our democratic processes in local government. Community input and participation is crucial for building a great city where people want to live, work, and visit.

Here are a few fun facts about community engagement in the City of Parramatta over the last 12 months:

Why is it important for you to have a say in your city?

In celebration of Global Community Engagement Day (28 January), Council ran a one-month online engagement activity throughout early 2022 to find out more about why this key democratic process matters to you!

Thank you for getting involved! Over 130 community members posted their thoughts on an online ‘visioner board’, with several key themes coming through.

  • Our community is passionate about the need to influence Council’s decision-making.
  • Our community has a strong desire to be connected with what is going on across the city and neighbourhoods.
  • Our community feels responsible for the success of projects in Parramatta, and through engagement, wants to have shared ownership of decisions.
  • Our community sees engagement as a vital avenue for increasing visibility on local issues.
  • Our community wants to have the cultural diversity of Parramatta reflected in the decisions that Council makes.

Of the 130+ comments that were received, a few have been picked out below to provide some further insights into what you are telling us. It is pleasing to see the number of positive comments received in relation to Council’s community engagement activities.

Equally, there were a number of comments received which speak to the desire of community members to see even more engagement opportunities provided by Council.

Feel free to reach out to Council’s Community Engagement Team via participate@cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au or on 1300 617 058 should you have any questions or feedback in relation to community engagement in the City of Parramatta.

We look forward to engaging with you on more projects soon!
